De’Andre Johnson Punches Woman in Face, Gets Kicked Off Florida State
He grabbed her and she responded by kneeing him and attempting to throw a punch. Johnson is seen punching the woman in the face with his right fist after the two engaged in shoving for several seconds at the bar of a nightclub near FSU’s campus, night club, Yiannis. “She suffered bruising under her left eye, swelling to the left cheek and a small cut near the bridge of her nose”.
But, State Attorney Willie Meggs says he went over the video frame by frame with the woman who says the first contact was by Johnson when he elbowed her in the back. Police charged Johnson with misdemeanor battery for that altercation, according to MSN.
Florida State has dismissed Johnson from the team on the same day that prosecutors released video showing him punching a woman at a bar. “While it is always important to adhere to due process, having now seen the physical altercation captured on video, there is no question in my mind that Coach Fisher made the correct decisions”. He was released on $500 bond.
Johnson was suspended indefinitely by the team last week following the aftermath of the incident. But the university should be applauded for meting out a swift, appropriate punishment, a standard that should hold true for all students, including athletes. “Florida State University was forged from an outstanding college for women and has a long tradition of being a caring community that demands students be treated with dignity and respect”.
In an interview with NBC on Tuesday, attorney Jose Baez said the woman raised her fist and shouted racial epithets at Johnson. He is expected in court later this month and has not yet entered a plea.
“While it is clear from the video that De’Andre Johnson was not the initial aggressor, his family wants to take the lead in helping him learn and grow from this experience”, said Baez in a statement on Monday, prior to Johnson’s dismissal from the football program.
A statement from FSU reads, “Florida State head football coach Jimbo Fisher announced Monday evening that freshman De’Andre Johnson has been dismissed from the football team effective immediately”.
