David Accam scores in Chicago Fire draw
The Ghanaian settled the ball, cut back to beat two defenders, then put his shot between Orlando goalkeeper Tally Hall and the near post in the 30th minute.
The first rain delay on Saturday night lasted a stop-and-start two hours, at one point coming just a minute or so away from player introductions when a flash of lightning and clash of thunder kept the players from ever exiting the tunnel.
David Accam was on target once again for Chicago Fire even though his side could not nick all three points on the road in Major League Soccer.
The Men in Red are again on the road next week when they head to Stade Saputo to challenge the Montreal Impact on Saturday, September 5 at 7 p.m. Connecticut (CSN/ESPN Deportes 97.5 FM).
The game entered into yet another delay at 9:38 in the 18th minute when lightning struck nearby.
“Razvan Cocis found David Accam with a long, diagonal ball”. Anchoring Chicago’s growing soccer fan base, the Fire play at Toyota Park in Bridgeview, Ill., located 15 miles from Chicago’s Loop. They got their response seven minutes later when Gehrig deflected the ball into his own net. Originally awarded to Cyle Larin, the goal was quickly changed to an own-goal – the third the Fire have given up against Orlando City this season, oddly enough.
Despite the conditions, the end to match featured plenty of chances for both sides.
The momentum shifted to Orlando with Larin making a quick break in the sixth minute, but sending his shot wide left.
Shots: 9; Shots On Goal: 2; Saves: 2; Fouls: 3; Corner Kicks: 4; Offsides: 1. Saving the ball from crossing the touchline, he broke his way back toward the middle of the box, beating right back Corey Ashe, before firing a tough-angle shot to the right of Hall for the score.
An independent review panel has denied a red card appeal by Orlando City. Chicago (7-13-6, 27 pts.) returned the favor two minutes later, but Larin failed to pass to either Rivas on his left or Kaká on his right and instead opted to take on two defenders and shoot wide of goal.
In the 58th minute, Kaka rifled a shot from the top of the 18 high. When the game finally concluded past midnight on Sunday, Orlando City had failed to get the three points it so desperately needed. The Lions came closest on 82 minutes as Larin’s storming run down the right and cutback laid the goal open for Rivas, but the Colombian winger – still looking for his first MLS goal – could only hit the outside of the post from 10 yards. However, he sent the ball sailing over the bar as Orlando missed a golden chance to take the lead going into the half.
