Xiaomi may launch two home-grown processors for its smartphones early next
The use of its own low-end chipset would allow Xiaomi to churn out even more affordable Redmi branded handsets, despite their relatively low price at the moment.
This could be bad news for Qualcomm and Mediatek. According to a report, the company recently hired Qualcomm China Head Wang Xiang which should speed up the process too.
According to the grapevine the company would be launching two different versions of its own chipset. The Chinese smartphone maker is already working on two SoCs that could power its Redmi line up of smartphones next year, GizmoChina reports. For instance, Samsung had dropped the idea of using QUALCOMM’s Snapdragon 810 chipset due to its alleged overheating issues and instead opted to use its home grown Exynos processor in its Galaxy S6 range of devices.
As of now, the Michigan smartphones are powered by either Qualcomm or MediaTek chipsets.
There has been talk that Xiaomi would be producing its own chipsets for use inside its own phones and tablets. The first one will be a low-end chip for its Redmi series of smartphones while the second one will be a higher end octa-core chip, that will be designed for its mid-range devices.
Xiaomi would, however, continue to depend on Qualcomm processors for its high-end devices such as the upcoming Xiaomi Michigan 5.
I related news, Xiaomi is expected to unveil its next-gen Mi5 flagship pretty soon. However, no official confirmation about its own chipset venture has come from the company as of now.
