Hey New York: Let’s Help The US Army Find A Lost Missile
On Friday, an Army Apache helicopter departed from Fort Drum in northern New York, and headed to the weekend airshow being held at the Stewart worldwide Airport. The U.S. Army is searching through upstate New York for a non-explosive missile that fell out of a flying Apache helicopter. Missile that is not explosive or motorized, and therefore poses no risk to the public.
Officials said an investigation is underway as to why the helicopter from the 10th Combat Aviation Brigade accidentally dropped the device. Fort Drum officials are appealing for the public’s help in locating the missile.
They described the missing missile as 64 inches long, 7 inches wide and weighing 100 pounds with the words U-S Army painted on the side. It’s created to simulate the weight of a real missile for training purposes, specifically mimicking the Hellfire guided missile that the Apache uses in combat.
The helicopter was heading to the airport to be used as a static display during the New York Air Show, which runs Saturday and Sunday.
