Defender undoing Chelsea medical as transfer deadline looms

With less than two days remaining for the transfer window to shut down, we have fresh reports, again from Di Marzio, that Chelsea are now holding talks with Nantes to sign their highly rated defender Papy Djilobodji.

The 6ft 4ins Senegal global has been courted by Celtic, Southampton, Newcastle, Leicester and Sunderland this summer but has been holding out for a bigger club.

Jose Mourinho has been trying to sign Everton star John Stones in recent weeks, but having had several bids for the England global rejected, the Portuguese boss has turned his attentions elsewhere.

The Premier League champions have conceded nine goals in four games in accruing four points to sit eight adrift of leaders Manchester City.

Nantes representative Franck Kita has confirmed an agreement with Chelsea for the transfer of Djilobodji, speaking to France Football.

The 26-year-old can also play as a defensive midfielder and would cost around £5.5million.

And the Blues feel Djilobodji could be the answer to their problems at Stamford Bridge.

While Nantes will undoubtedly be reluctant to lose Djilobodji’s services, standing firm against the financial power of Chelsea is likely to be a step too far for the Ligue 1 outfit, while the player only has a further year left on his contract.
