Strasburg left Saturday’s game against the Giants after 3 2-3 scoreless innings because of tightness in his left side. Williams did not specify the severity of the strain, nor outline a timetable for Strasburg’s return.
Strasburg already had been sidelined for almost a month this season because of neck tightness.
Hernandez, who struck out six and walked two, had gone 13 consecutive starts without losing at the Coliseum, matching the longest streak by an opposing pitcher. Williams called on Tanner Roark, who will likely start in Strasburg’s place while he recovers, to relieve him.
Nationals outfielder Bryce Harper had doubled in the seventh inning against reliever Yusmeiro Petit to put runners on second and third with no outs for Wilson Ramos. 325 and only one quality start in 10 tries. He has pitched to a 2.97 ERA and 3.28 FIP in 63.2 innings with Triple-A Syracuse.
BOSTON – David Ortiz will be using his glove to start a game in Fenway Park for the first time in almost 10 years.
Twins starter Mike Pelfrey was chased after the Royals’ first four hitters in the fifth reached base, the last on Lorenzo Cain’s two-run single.
Before Sunday’s game against the Houston Astros, Ortiz last manned first base against an AL opponent on August 5, 2006, at Tampa Bay. By the end of that season, he was on the disabled list with a torn ligament in his right elbow that required Tommy John surgery. Harper, the right fielder, then lined a 1-1 pitch into the Nationals bullpen, picking up his 59th and 60th RBIs of the season. They are also 24-14 in home games.
Rain delayed the game’s scheduled first pitch by 19 minutes. In the last three starts, he’s been incredible.
Garcia is 3-3 with a 1.69 ERA in seven starts.
Manager Mike Matheny announced that Cooney and lefty Tyler Lyons are slated to draw the starting assignments for the Cardinals in Tuesday’s split doubleheader at Chicago.
The patriotic version he used on July 4 against Madison Bumgarner and the San Francisco Giants was no exception. He was 0 for five in six games for the Giants this season. He also hit a combined. And yet they finished play Sunday night with a 4/2 -game lead in the (dreadful) National League East.
Pirates get Ishikawa • Pittsburgh claimed first baseman Travis Ishikawa off waivers from San Francisco. He cleared waivers and signed with the Giants days later. There was a debate about who should start opening day, with cases to be made for Scherzer, Strasburg and Zimmermann. In his career against the Nationals, Vogelsong is 1-2 with a 6.59 ERA.
Schoop was transferred to the 60-day disabled list on June 16.
