The Dodgers placed right fielder Yasiel Puig on the disabled list Friday due to a right hamstring injury suffered during Thursday’s contest against the Cincinnati Reds.
It has been an injury-plagued year for Puig, who missed 39 games earlier in the season with a left hamstring strain, and was limited to two plate appearances in a four-game span in June with an open blister on his left hand. He underwent an MRI on Friday, but Mattingly said he has been given no indication on how long Puig might be sidelined – other than that it was “bad enough to put him on the DL”.
“We were kind of in that area where if we could wait four or five days, you know, we’re not going to need the DL”, Mattingly said. “With the hamstring, we’ll just see where we’re at”.
Another important piece to the Dodgers’ lineup, second baseman Howie Kendrick, is already on the DL with a hamstring injury and had been making progress toward a rehab assignment starting this weekend. “He (Peraza) can also play the outfield, which allows us to move (outfielder) Kike Hernandez around and do some things with lefties”.
“We had the sense he was totally recovered”, Mattingly said.
Peraza, 21, hit.293/.316/.378 in Triple-A this season, including.289/.304/.378 in 22 games with Triple-A Oklahoma City since he was acquired from the Braves on July 30.
