Detroit Lions acquire TE Tim Wright from Tampa Bay Buccaneers

Wright became available because he was looking unlikely to make the final roster in Tampa. The team also has Eric Ebron and Brandon Pettigrew at the position, and it’s unlikely the Lions will carry four tight ends on the roster heading into the season. Tampa originally traded Wright to New England last season for Pro Bowl guard Logan Mankins.

The 6-foot-4 Wright had 26 catches for 259 yards and six touchdowns for the Patriots a year ago. Wright caught 54 passes with five touchdowns as a rookie for the Bucs in 2013. Wright came into the league as receiver and was converted to tight end. Wright barely got on the field for the Patriots in 2014, primarily showing up as a red zone threat, and was cut at the start of the 2015 offseason. He was then claimed off waivers by Tampa Bay.

Tight end Timothy Wright is moving on to yet another team.

Austin Seferian-Jenkins is clearly the Bucs starter at TE, but he did have some health issues in his rookie year, so having Wright behind him or to even play alongside him in some packages appeared to be a good idea.
