Bulls agree to deals with Portis, Brooks – 07-07

The forward has a 7-1 wingspan with large hands and Jazz general manager Dennis Lindsey said after the draft that Lyles can get bigger.

With free agent point guards that fit the bill as a potential Chicago Bulls backup flying off the board, the Bulls have brought back Aaron Brooks on a one-year deal, per ESPN’s Marc Stein. Brooks was one of the most entertaining bench players in the league during the 2014-2015 regular season while averaging just under 12 points a game in 23 minutes per contest, but he crapped the bed in the playoffs which the numbers support. The 6-foot guard struggled in the playoffs, shooting 34.4 percent and 30 percent from 3-point range. The Bulls could still use a long term backup point guard as Derrick Rose is injury prone. E’Twaun Moore, whose team option has partial guarantees for next season, also will be in the mix.

The 20-year-old Portis is on the Bulls’ summer league roster.

The reigning SEC player of the year threw out the first pitch at the Chicago White Sox game Monday night and then Tuesday he signed his rookie contract with the Bulls. The hope in Chicago is that new head coach Fred Hoiberg will play both Snell and McDermott more and hope they develop.

The Bulls play the first of at least five games on Saturday against the Timberwolves in Las Vegas.

Hoiberg went to his past for the third head coach as he selected his ex- Iowa State assistant Charlie Henry to fill the same role in Chicago. He also previously worked with Boylen with the Pacers and at the University of Utah.
