Commonwealth Scam: Delhi HC sends five people to jail
A court here on Monday convicted four municipal officials, a private company and its two officials in the Commonwealth Games street-lights case.
The court had concluded hearing arguments on quantum of sentence for the convicts on Tuesday and pronounced the order in the matter on Wednesday. Ltd. and its director J.P. Singh and managing director T.P. Singh. Acting on the direction of the CVC, the CBI had registered the case against the convicts.
The convicts had asked for a lenient sentence arguing that they had spent around 11 months in jail during the trial.
Sugan’s counsel told the court that his client is 52 years old and a diabetic patient.
While Mahala told court that he has a clean record in the department, adding no enquiry against her is pending in the MCD. Defence counsel sought time to submit relevant judgments.
They were held guilty for various offences including criminal conspiracy, cheating, forgery of valuable security, forgery for goal of cheating, using forged documents as genuine under the IPC and Section 13(1)(d) (criminal misconduct by public servant by corrupt means and abusing position) of the Prevention of Corruption Act.
Five of the accused in 2010 Commonwealth Games scam has been sentenced by a Delhi court today.
CBI had alleged that the MCD officials had entered into a conspiracy while awarding the tender to the private firm for upgrading the street-lighting on roads in Delhi under the jurisdiction of the civic body.
During arguments, the CBI prosecutor contended that the convicts had caused a loss of over Rs 1.42 crore to the erstwhile Municipal Corporation of Delhi and maximum punishment of seven years should be awarded to them.
The CBI also charged Mehul Karnik, an employee of Philips India, but he was later discharged.
