Taiwan expected to get visa-free treatment from Indonesia

Indonesian Institute President Ross Taylor said China was set to supplant Australia as the largest source of tourists visiting the Indonesia holiday island of Bali, however authorities are keen to entice Australians “back to their favorite playground”.

Bishop had a breakfast meeting with Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi in Sydney this morning, where they discussed the visa issue, amongst many others.

The CNN Indonesia report also said that three countries that have contributed a great deal to foreign tourist arrivals – namely Australia, India and Taiwan – will be included on the new list. “Occasionally there are ups and downs, but certainly under this government, there will be no gratuitous offence given, there will be no shocks”, he told reporters in Melbourne on Thursday.

Indonesia cut quotas but reversed the move to head off a beef shortage, receiving a shipment of 2000 cattle on Wednesday with another 7500 to be delivered in September.

Prime Minister Tony Abbott has said in a statement on Thursday that he believes there is enough scope for Australia and Indonesia to become “trusted partners” despite the events in the recent past that have affected the bilateral ties between the two countries.

Taiwanese passport holders are among those allowed to enter Indonesia with a landing visa.

Bishop is due to travel to Indonesia in mid-October to hand over the chairmanship of the Indian Ocean Rim Association to Jakarta.

“The personal contact between Australian government ministers and our counterparts is very important and that’s why Retno Marsudi and I keep in constant contact”, said Bishop.

Trade Minister Andrew Robb is expected to lead a business mission to Indonesia soon.
