Mega Man Movie Reportedly in Development at 20th Century Fox

Unfortunately, video game movies in the past have faced quite a bad rap, so hopefully this project ends in the best.

According to a new report, 20th Century Fox is planning on filming a live-action Mega Man movie.

David Ready and Michael Finfer are overseeing the project, with Peter Chernin producing. 20th Century Fox and Chernin Entertainment announced they will bring the fan favorite series to the big screen. Chernin Entertainment has also worked on TV shows like Terra Nova and New Girl. Mike Ireland and Ryan Horrigan are also on board. The game has spawned a number of sequels and spin-off series. He’s appeared in over 50 games to date, with Mega Man Legacy Collection just released and collecting together the first six games.

The game follows Rock, a lab assistant of Dr. Light who is turned into a battle robot android and tasked will defending the world from the evil Dr. Wily and his many different violent robotic creations and the Robot Masters. Now it looks like Mega Man is going to jump to another platform. We’ll use the 1993 Super Mario Bros. movie adaptation as a reference point, one that although it has become a cult hit with fans, Nintendo itself prefers not to acknowledge. Even though many, like this summer’s Hitman: Agent 47, fail to really break out, studios aren’t giving up on the idea.

Plot-wise, Mega Man seems to fit in perfectly with today’s popular sci-fi landscape.
