Washington woman who died of measles had been vaccinated
Health officials in Washington State are warning that measles have been the determined as the source of illness that resulted in the death of a pacific northwest woman.
An autopsy has revealed that the death of a woman this spring in Washington State on the US west coast was due to An undetected measles infection. The health officials are also withholding information regarding whether or not the woman had received her vaccination, although they did mention that she had a compromised immune system for a different reason.
Her name and age were not made public.
As per reports, she was suffering from a number of health conditions and was hospitalized in the spring at a facility in Clallam County; the northern area of the Olympic Peninsula also comes under it.
The woman was missing some of the classic symptoms of measles; for example, she didn’t develop a rash, the statement said.
Officials believe the woman, who has not been identified, caught the disease from another patient at a health clinic where she had been treated.
There have been 176 cases of measles in the United States so far this year, with 117 of those cases linked to the Disney outbreak, according to the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
“We know that even when measles is endemic”, Dr. Mark Schleiss, professor of pediatrics and director of the Division of Infectious Diseases and Immunology at the University of Minnesota, told Forbes, “we can prevent deaths through immunization”.
Moyer said measles is highly communicable and when an infected person breathes, sneezes or coughs, it spreads.
People who have a compromised immune system are not able to receive a vaccination against the measles.
The CDC said that cases of measles have been rising recently, as more adults are opting to not vaccinate their kids. You will protect yourself and as equally important your loved ones and neighbors who are vulnerable or can’t mount a good defense against infection.
“We really rely on people who can be vaccinated to protect those for whom vaccine protection isn’t available”. That was one of the chief causes of death from measles in the pre-vaccine era.
She was on medications that contributed to her weakened immune system, he said. Washington has had 11 measles cases this year, six of them in Clallam County.
The news from Washington comes as California Gov. Jerry Brown has signed a law making vaccinations mandatory for children in California schools, removing a previous option that allowed parents to seek an exemption on religious and personal belief grounds. Since three weeks have passed since the last measles case, no one who had contact with the known cases is at risk, Moyer said.
