Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund show of support for — EU Refugee crisis
Bayern Munich will donate one million euros ($1.11 million) to help migrants and will set up a training camp for those arriving in Munich, as the number coming to the city rises.
At the club’s next home match on September 12th, each player will be escorted into the Allianz Arena by a German youngster on one side and a refugee child on the other.
Karl Heinz Rummenigge, Bayern’s president, said: “Bayern has a social responsibility to help the refugees, needy children, women and men, to help them and to assist them in Germany”.
The photos of Borussia Dortmund fans holding up banners reading “Refugees Welcome” on their famous Yellow Wall stand went viral on the internet.
“For this reason, I was happy to pledge support from the city of Munich”, he said.
The Bundesliga champions plan to provide food, German lessons and football equipment for children. Chancellor Angela Merkel has said Germany will have “no tolerance” for “shameful and vile” violence against refugees.
Mainz, which competes alongside Bayern and Dortmund in Germany’s top division, also welcomed refugees to its tie against Hannover.
“Germany is now experiencing its greatest influx of refugees for many decades. None of us can understand the true horrors of this situation but as a club we wanted to show our support for those affected”.
Germany is witnessing an unprecedented surge of asylum seekers this year.
Thousands of refugees have died while fleeing their homelands. They don’t want to be just football fans, but be something more.
Over 2,000 refugees arrived by train into Munich on Tuesday, with local authorities claiming they were overwhelmed by the level of help provided by locals.
Germany’s national team, which won the World Cup in Brazil previous year, has also gotten involved.
