Marvel Comics’ Totally Awesome Hulk Will Be Amadeus Cho
Believe us, you’ve never seen a Hulk like this before – and it’s TOTALLY AWESOME. But I also want to say that he will be the only Hulk in the Marvel Universe. And the story is totally true for both the Hulk story and the Amadeus story, so it’s a lot of fun when those kinds of things can naturally come together for something this big. The new series will see Cho replace Bruce Banner as the strongest hero in the Marvel Universe.
Cho is the main character in the “Totally Awesome Hulk” series written by Greg Pak and drawn by Frank Cho. In an interview with EW, Marvel editor-in-chief Axel Alonso explained how he and Pak decided to make Cho the new Hulk rather than stick with Banner. Alonso said: One of them is that physically, hes like Banner: hes the 98-pound weakling whos had everything but the physical aspect to make him seem super cool. As part of its “all new, all different” initiative, Marvel is shelving the Banner storyline and giving his superpowers to a lesser-known character: Amadeus Cho. He shares the monstrous intellect but he’s so different – he’s a teenage kid, who’s hasn’t lived much yet. This propels him to new heights of fame, and with those Hulk legs, hell certainly go far. Since he became the Hulk as an adult, Banner treated Hulk as a burden, like Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. The answer to that will come with the arrival of the books, which across the entire Marvel line will skip ahead eight months from the end of the current “Secret Wars” event. And I think that it showed in the way that he responded to it. Amadeus is a plucky kid.
Marvel Marvel’s first Korean-American superhero, the Hulk, debuts in December. And in fact, that was one of the things that Greg and Mark and I discussed, how fascinating Banner’s life will become now that he no longer has this weight on his shoulders. Hes got a chip on his shoulder, hes the fifth or sixth smartest guy in the world according to the official rankings, and I think hes just going to carry himself very differently with that power. Be there as the Hulk’s exciting journey begins this December in the bombastic debut of TOTALLY AWESOME HULK #1! Banner’s story will continue, but not as the Hulk.
Axel Alonso also told EW that Amadeus loves being the Hulk, which is a big change from the way the Green Goliath usually operates as any character’s alter ego, and that he’ll be the only Hulk in the Marvel Universe after several decades of gamma-powered proliferation. “So, we’ve got the monster hunt, we’ve got the mystery of what happened to Banner and what’s going on with Banner, and then there’s an emotional story, of course”.
The She-Hulk will also be in the first issue, and serve as a foil for Amadeus.
