Agent says Saints placing Spencer on injured reserve
Injuries were the big story of the Saints’ first round of cuts. The Eagles have been penalized 40 times for 369 yards. “That will cost us a game”.
Murphy provided sparks of life on both offense and special teams, even breaking a punt return for a touchdown that was called back because of a personal foul penalty against a teammate. I just found out about this yesterday. He is still one of the best quarterbacks in the National Football League, although he isn’t going to have the type of weapons that he has had over the past few seasons. “A lot of people asked where they could buy it and it was kind of homemade”, Payton said. “Obviously we’ve got to improve in that area….”
You can expect backup quarterback Ryan Griffin, the former Tulane standout to get more playing time against the Packers on Thursday. “But that’s something that’s a work in progress”. He was targeted 23 times throughout camp and made 13 catches.
“I like the player….”
“Each week he’s been close”, said Payton. Did it lead you back to square one at the end of that game? He has been, I would say, fairly consistent in camp. I really don’t focus on making the team. “I think more importantly is the evaluation of some of those other guys”.
-With training camp behind them, the Saints’ coaching staff has been trying to figure out who will win the third and fourth wide receiver spots behind Marques Colston and Brandin Cooks.
Bonner has played the past two seasons for the Texans.
Brandon Coleman likely would have won the No. 3 receiver job if Toon were healthy, and it’s possible he could have been replaced on the roster by players like Joe Morgan, Josh Morgan, Willie Snead or Seantavius Jones. Of course Damian (Swann) is a rookie first year player. Hopkins had only one extra-point attempt that he converted in the second half.
Behind them, undrafted rookie Ashaad Mabry is coming off a solid outing, and Thursday’s game gives him a final opportunity to show what he can do.
Lewis did not participate in the Saints’ practice Tuesday according to ESPN although he played in their preseason game last Sunday against the Houston Texans. He was working his way back from 2013 microfracture surgery on his knee and appeared to be in position to compete for a prominent role on the defense. – Saints coach Sean Payton pulled his players together during his usual team meeting Wednesday, preparing them for the upcoming day.
-RB Khiry Robinson has not practiced since suffering an undisclosed injury on August 22 and it’s not known when he’ll return. His injury, in some ways, clears up a logjam at cornerback.
Toon, who reportedly injured his ankle, is entering the final year of his contract, meaning that his tenure in New Orleans could be over.
