Harry Kane reaffirms Spurs commitment despite Manchester United
His involvement stretched his number of competitive appearances to 56 (32 goals) – Wayne Rooney played 47 (22 goals) – plus an end-of-season jaunt across the world to the Far East. Tottenham warned of burn-out, but when it came to it manager Mauricio Pochettino did not choose to ease Kane into the campaign if only because he has no other strikers.
“Wayne has done it year in, year out”, Kane said.
Rooney has had a slow start to his club season with United but the team in general have been laboured in attack.
The 22-year old believes the Manchester United star “who has done it year in year out, played for club and country and done it so well” can ‘only help me as a centre forward‘.
Kane has experienced a quicker rise than any of his peers in the English game over the last 12 months. “If I get chances in games I know I am going to score so I am really not too anxious”.
“I am also very pleased and honoured to work together with good players such as Harry, Christian Eriksen and all the players at Spurs”.
According to the Tottenham academy recruit, being on fire or going through a tiresome phase are all part of a striker’s career and he is absolutely positive about coming out of his lean patch sooner rather than later.
It is easily forgotten that the 22-year-old started last season as understudy to Emmanuel Adebayor and Roberto Soldado and did not claim the first of his 21 Premier League goals until November.
Rooney, of course, has his sights set on breaking Sir Bobby Charlton’s all-time worldwide goalscoring record in the forthcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers.
“I had a few weeks off after the tournament and I’ve come back in good shape – I feel as fit as ever”, said Kane.
It’s great to be able to train with him and learn from him, he’s an all-round top player and a top man.
England, victors in all six of their qualifiers, can have their Euro 2016 place sealed tomorrow and Kane added: “It will be a great achievement, but exactly what we were looking to do. We have to stay calm and improve”.
Unlike many of his contemporaries, when speculation emerged linking him with a move to Manchester United, he did not kick up a fuss.
More competition is needed up front to challenge Olivier Giroud, and given they have not scored in either of their home games this season so far, their decision not to add a forward is likely to hinder their main goal.
