Los Angeles will pursue bid to host 2024 Olympics Games
Los Angeles, twice the host of transformative and profitable Games, was named the USA candidate for the 2024 Olympic Games and Paralympics by the U.S. Olympic Committee on Tuesday.
“It is an honour for any city to host the Olympic Games, and Los Angeles is uniquely prepared for this task”.
The worldwide Olympic Committee (IOC) will elect a winning bid in September 2017.
In this ultimatum business over Olympic bids, the IOC knows it can say whatever it wants.
Despite their enthusiastic vote, the city council members expressed caution about guarding taxpayer funds.
Los Angeles re-entered the running for 2024 after USOC’s original choice Boston withdrew amid fears of taxpayers being left on the hook for cost overruns.
The city hosted the Games in 1932 and again in 1984, when it was able to actually turn a profit, with the help of extensive corporate sponsorships.
In the wake of failed bids by Chicago and New York, the USOC has improved its relations with the IOC, in no small way by increasing the portion of American television dollars shared with the rest of the Olympic movement. “We are very fortunate to be in the position to have so many world-class venues available to us as it has allowed us to develop a sustainable plan that aligns with the city’s long term vision and the IOC’s Olympic Agenda 2020”.
“The viral tests, we will do and we will repeat this because the most important (thing) for us is the health of the athletes”, Nuzman said in an interview in London.
Exiting City Hall’s council chambers after personally thanking several council members for their vote, Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti told reporters that the Olympics is in the city’s DNA.
A preliminary review of the budget appeared to show that one of the major capital projects, the Olympic Village, “may significantly exceed the projected $1 billion”, City Administrative Officer Miguel Santana and Chief Legislative Analyst Sharon Tso wrote in a report Thursday.
This opened the door for other cities such as Los Angeles, especially give some perceptions that America might be due to host another Summer Olympics. This plays into Bach’s “Olympic Agenda 2020” program, which seeks affordable games and maximum use of existing or temporary venues.
The head of the city’s budget committee, Gary Crawford, said Tuesday there were “a lot of unanswered questions” over financing of the games. His first item was the financial commitment, if any, of the city. The last time the Games were held in the United States was 28 years ago.
“I think the International Olympic Committee understands that it must reciprocate”, said Robert Baade, an economics professor at Lake Forest College in Illinois.
Potential foreign bidders include Rome; Nairobi, Kenya; Casablanca, Morocco; Johannesburg and Durban, South Africa; Doha, Qatar; Melbourne, Australia; Paris; Hamburg, Germany; and St. Petersburg, Russia.
