61% Of Trump Supporters Are Birthers
Fifty-four percent of Republicans said they thought Obama was a Muslim, while 14 percent said he was a Christian and 32 percent were unsure.
The poll had scant good news for candidates who generated early buzz in the GOP field, including Govs.
When asked about Social Security, 57 percent of Republican voters agreed that the program should be protected from cuts when Hillary Clinton supported it. A staggering 74 percent of Republicans said they supported Social Security protection behind Trump. The poll also pulled the curtain back on who is supporting Trump at this point in the primary process.
His supporters’ views fit in with those of the Republican electorate at large: Nationally, PPP found, more than half – 54% – of GOP voters think Obama is a Muslim and only 29% say they accept that he was born in the U.S. The White House ultimately released Obama’s long-form birth certificate.
Birtherism – the false belief that Obama was born in another country – has never been rooted in any durable logic or empirical evidence, and it has not been swayed by incompatible truths. Another a third of Republicans are not sure where Obama was born.
Cruz was born in Calgary, Canada, to an American mother and Cuban father. But it’s one that’s followed him throughout his presidency. In the 90’s, Trump stated “I believe in universal healthcare”.
Trump and his gumshoes never produced any actual evidence, but he again appeared on CNN in May 2012 suggesting that the president’s status as citizen was a matter of “opinion”.
Trump was able to inject a fringe theory into the mainstream through the power of his personal brand and its attendant resources.
