US women begin home World Cup celebrations with LA fan rally
This was homecoming day for soccer’s world champions, but amid the celebration after the stirring win over Japan, and the record television ratings, some wonder if the women are getting short-changed.
The home celebrations got underway for the World Cup winners on Tuesday.
The first stateside appearance was a raucous party in front of fans who began camping out before dawn on short notice. It should be noted, however, that Hurst hit two of his three goals in extra-time of a much closer game, while Lloyd, by comparison, had already completed her triple – and effectively won the game for the US – long before Hurst had even registered his first. Indeed, we’re told that star goalie Hope Solo took a picture of one fan’s sign calling for equal pay for women athletes. But despite the likely departure of the 40-year-old Rampone, the last link to that ’99 team, the current version will have plenty of opportunity to build on this performance in next year’s Olympic Games. “We didn’t have this just a few years ago”. “You guys have been the most awesome of fans throughout the entire time”.
If any victory in American sports history deserved to be honored in the most famous city the country has to offer, it’s certainly the one accrued by the USWNT on Sunday afternoon.
The players also led a sing-along to Queen’s “We Are the Champions” before leaving the stage.
Mayor Bill de Blasio’s office says the parade will be held this Friday down the Canyon of Heroes in lower Manhattan.
Recently, it was revealed the women’s team will split $2 million for their victory.
Lauren Holiday also was thinking about her future after scoring a goal in the World Cup final. This one is probably indisputable, as Lloyd is the only player to hit a hat-trick in a Women’s World Cup final. With the win, the United States is the only team to have won three World Cups. “I don’t think it’s totally sunk in yet”, Rapinoe said. “I think people will watch”.
