Manny Pacquiao promoter suggests boxer will retire next year
He added that Pacquiao will retire after his last fight before Mayweather himself hangs his glove.
The 36-year-old had recorded three consecutive victories before facing the American, having defeated Chris Algieri, Timothy Bradley Jr and Brandon Rios by a unanimous points decision, but he fell short against his undefeated opponent. His loss to Floyd Mayweather in May left him with a sixth career defeat and a torn labrum, which the fighter is still recovering from.
Regardless of whether Mayweather accepts Pac-Man’s challenge, the current indications are that Pacquiao will compete in his final fight at some point in 2016.
Pacquiao is the now represents Sarangani in Congress, and though he has yet to publicly admit that he’s eyeing a seat in the Senate by next year’s national elections, several within his inner circles are aware of his plans to run for a higher office.
Once he does, he’d like get in the ring one last time. The same thing happened to Rios when he fought Pacquiao in Macau, China in 2011. I think Floyd can break it but I want to make sure he’s ready.
According to Arum, Pacquiao is likely going to fight only one more time before turning his attention full-time to running for the Senate in his native Philippines.
You’ve also got the injury that Pacquiao came into the fight with.
“There’s nothing to even talk about with that fight”. Pacquiao drew the ire of millions of fight fans when he revealed an injured shoulder after the contest, blaming that for his lack of offensive firepower and sluggish performance. At stake is the WBO welterweight title and will be shown on HBO pay-per-view.
Rarely do we ever see fighters walk away from the sport at just the right time. But I’d be very surprised if he only fights once next year. It’s not interesting to fight someone and beat them soundly and then hear them fail to admit that they lost the fight.
