Comedy Central Extends ‘South Park’ Three Years
Matt & Trey will continue to write and direct each episode of South Park.
The fictional town of South Park will stay on the map for a few more years.
The show, which premiered in 1997, is the longest-running, primetime, scripted series in cable-television history.
“South Park’s 19th season bows September 16”.
South Park creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone have reached a new deal with Comedy Central to extend the edgy, animated series by three seasons and 30 episodes. The ex- contract would see the series wrap itself up after 20 seasons in 2016, but the extension will guarantee the show remains on the air until 2019 and pull it across the 300 episode mark.
“Nearly two decades later, South Park today remains as important and influential as any series on any platform and has become one of the most recognizable brands to ever come out of television”, Comedy Central owner Viacom executive Doug Herzog said in a statement. The video on demand service will remain the exclusive streaming home of South Park, with each of the new seasons and episodes coming to the service in addition to the 254 episodes of the show that already call Hulu home. They’ve given us an insane level of artistic and creative freedom for nearly 20 years.
So what are your thoughts on South Park continuing on with this three-year renewal?
According to The Hollywood Reporter, parent company Viacom will net half of the fee, while the rest will go to Parker and Stone. A sequel, “South Park: The Fractured but Whole”, was announced earlier this month at E3 2015 by Ubisoft and South Park Digital Studios. Parker and Stone started the series in 1997.
