Two Killed as F-16 Collides With Cessna
An F-16 fighter jet and a Cessna aircraft crashed near a South Carolina highway in Berkeley County on Tuesday morning killing two people, officials said. Sometimes pilots can have a false sense of security when air traffic control tells them it has control.
“I can tell you in my experience, I haven’t had any close calls because the Air Force is very disciplined about how it operates its aircraft”, Jost said.
According to media partners SConFire.com, the incident was being reported as a “plane collision” involving a Cessna with large debris in the area.
Emergency personnel from Berkeley County stood outside a campground surrounded by police tape near Moncks Corner, S.C., Tuesday, after an F-16 fighter jet smashed into a small plane over South Carolina.
“We have no reason to believe anyone survived”, Salisbury said.
The crash occurred near Moncks Corner, north of Charleston, the Federal Aviation Administration said, in a statement. He is a “highly experienced pilot” who was on a training mission that day, Col Stephen Jost said during a press conference.
Investigators are converging on an area near Charleston, S.C., where an F-16 crashed Tuesday after colliding with a civilian Cessna airplane around 11:30 a.m. ET.
“The U.S. Air Force pilot ejected safely and is apparently uninjured”, officials say.
Lt. Jenny Hyden at Shaw Air Force Base says the pilot was taken to the base for observation, though she did not disclose his condition. He said that a wallet was found after the collision. Much of the terrain is forest and swamp, only reachable by dirt and gravel roads.
Despite debris being scattered across the local area there were no reports of injuries on the ground. More than 150 people with more than 20 agencies are on the scene.
Berkeley County Sheriff Duane Lewis asked for patience for those who might encounter road closures.
“I heard a boom and then like a real subtle rumbling”, Jacobs said. Kathryn Dennis, one of the stars of Bravo’s “Southern Charm” reality TV show, was at home on the plantation when the two aircraft collided.
