Raiders expected to part ways with Christian Ponder
Seattle gave three different cornerbacks a chance at the position this August with Jeremy Lane on the Physically Unable to Perform list and certain to miss at least the first six games.
When it was time to punch the clock, fourth quarter and a little over two minutes remaining, Roberts broke a few tackles and gained 39 yards – over 20 yards after the catch.
Quarterback Christian Ponder opened the night, completing seven of 10 attempts for 99 yards, no touchdowns and a 101.7 passer rating.
“We haven’t been really doing a great job of playing Seahawks football when it comes to rushing the passer this preseason but I believe tonight we did”, said Clark.
Seattle finished the preseason 2-2.
The Rams will be another matter, of course, but every game the same five guys can play together is one in which they can inch closer to the type of cohesiveness that has been absent in the face of steady turnover. That’s not surprising considering their depth issues that necessitate keeping players at other spots.
Certainly no need for Derek Carr or Khalil Mack to do anything except relax on the sidelines, watch their back-ups in the game (which Seattle won 31-21), and prepare themselves for next Sunday’s regular-season opener at the Coliseum against Cincinnati.
The Seahawks’ first-team offense hadn’t managed a touchdown through the first three games of the preseason. Ponder played the first and fourth quarter and McGloin played the second and third. The sixth time was for a sack and fumble in Oakland’s end zone.
If there was a unit that had a hard night for the Seahawks it was the secondary. Steven Hauschka had another deep field goal-from 55 yards out-after his game-winning 60-yarder last Saturday against San Diego. Rawls meantime led Seattle rushing in the game.
Undrafted rookie running back Michael Dyer’s push to make the team didn’t get much traction. Hayden never turned around to look for the ball, but the pass deflected off him and was then almost intercepted by Taylor Mays.
But Daniels, a former college quarterback who’s on Seattle’s roster as a receiver, came in and engineered a 14-play, 80-yard drive that culminated in a 15-yard touchdown pass to Williams, feathering a ideal fade to the left corner to regain control of the game for the Seahawks. Kevin Pierre-Louis and Brock Coyle played exceptionally well throughout the preseason, and Frank Clark, Cassius Marsh and Jordan Hill are going to make an impact along the defensive line this season.
