Verizon’s Go90 Video Streaming Service Reportedly Coming This Week
According to a Company spokesperson, the service could be officially launched to all Verizon users as soon as later this month.
Verizon Communications has launched a trail version of its new video mobile service in its bid to be the first telecom player to compete with mobile ad industry titans Google and Facebook.
As numerous reports have already pointed out, the service could be launching as early as this week and it will be targeting a millennial audience that views a large amount of video on mobile devices. Its rival, AT&T, owns DirecTV, whose SlingTV service offers a bundle of TV channels for $20 a month. The service is also going to be including popular online series from AwesomenessTV, Vice, Tastemade and Machinima. The free service will drive revenue from data usage and targeted advertising. It’s not yet known how much Verizon will charge for a Go90 subscription. The name refers to the act of turning a phone 90 degrees to watch video in landscape mode.
Verizon is also playing up the social aspects of the service, noting that go90 will use features such as “Cut & Share; “Crews” (chat about and share content with other fans); connect via SMC, Facebook Twitter, and email; offer a “Follow” component that lets users track their favorite shows; and “Crowdsource” (recommendations from the go90 community)”. Verizon is now the only video service to offer advertisers customer data “based on location, at the personal level rather than the household level, with unprecedented knowledge of purchase intent and a wealth of demographic and prior purchase information”, Moffett said. Verizon says the content for Go90 will include live events, prime time television, and original web series. Popular shows from Comedy Central, Food Network, ESPN, NFL Network, and Discovery will be included.
The content lineup will include live games from the NCAA (football and basketball), worldwide soccer, and live performances.
