Fire on Carnival cruise ship in St.Thomas

A small fire broke out in the engine room on Carnival Liberty earlier today when the ship was docked in port while in St. Thomas.

The U.S. Coast Guard said that it was informed of the incident, which remains under investigation, and local media reported that since the cruise liner was docked at the time of the fire it was able to be evacuated relatively quickly.

This is good news because it means the Carnival Liberty cruise is not cancelled, although we are uncertain if Carnival will offer any sort of compensation to those affected by the fire. Abubaker said after she and her two friends enjoyed the beach, they headed back to the ship to find out what happened.

The cause has yet to be determined and the company has yet to inform passengers of its plans beyond Tuesday. “Updates will be provided as additional information becomes available”.

The cruise was on its second day of a seven-day Caribbean cruise that left San Juan, Puerto Rico on Sunday. According to Carnival, passengers can use the ship as a hotel and services, including air conditioning, elevators, toilets and galleys.

The biggest ship Portland has ever hosted, the Liberty of the Seas, is expected to arrive on September 12.

In 2011, the Carnival Liberty became the first cruise ship to serve Guy Fieri burgers daily as part of a $500 million renovation that included signature dining venues.
