Saudi king welcomes Iran nuclear deal at Obama meet
After consulting U.S. officials and European allies for two months, the Saudis were satisfied, he said, that the agreement would effectively contain Iraq’s nuclear programme.
Yet Al Jazeera reported Jubeir to have said: “We hope that the Iranians will avail themselves of this opportunity in order to use the openness to the world and the additional income that they receive to fund domestic development”.
The White House said the leaders had a “positive and fruitful discussion” during Salman’s visit as the two leaders addressed the ongoing crises in Syria and Yemen, the Iran nuclear pact, and the continued threat posed by al-Qaeda and ISIL.
His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman briefed the President on the Kingdom’s views regarding the strategic partnership.
But behind the warm public statements, there are disagreements on Syria and Yemen, and Obama acknowledged only that the two sides had much to discuss.
Saudi assets could have been reluctant to react transparently toward the Khobar strike seeing it showed up in 1996, and they privately have stretched out sent to viably al-Mughassil and his unbelievable Iranian handlers obviously as the offenders. “We always emphasize that we want to deepen our relations and further our cooperation in all fields”, said King Salman in remarks before the bilateral meeting.
Saudi Arabia has also joined the United States and other Arab states in airstrikes against the Islamic State jihadist movement in Syria, also called ISIS.
“We share a concern about Yemen and the need to restore a functioning government that is inclusive and can relieve the humanitarian situation there”, Obama stated.
Equally shocking was the news that the visiting Saudi monarch King Salman bin Abdulaziz’s delegation bought out the entire Four Seasons in Georgetown, one of Washington’s costliest hotels.
The Obama administration is focused on providing assistance the president promised at the Camp David summit, including helping Gulf states integrate ballistic missile defense systems and beef up cyber and maritime security. “Our relationship is not only useful between us but for the whole World”, he said.
“The king will be looking for reassurances that the Iran nuclear deal will not spell a sea change in United States policy in terms of treating Iran as a potential ally in the region rather than the adversary it’s been since 1979″, says James Phillips, a senior research fellow in Middle Eastern affairs at the Heritage Foundation in Washington. Vice President Joe Biden is expected to attend.
“Under Salman, Saudi Arabia has continued to execute people in record numbers, including nonviolent drug offenders; repressed pro-reform activists and peaceful dissidents; failed to take steps to protect the rights of foreign workers; and maintained its systematic discrimination against women and religious minorities”, the organization’s statement said.
“I’m happy to come to a friendly country to meet a friend”, he said.
