Conor McGregor Sees UFC 189 Vs. Chad Mendes As Championship, Not
The main event for the July 11th card was scheduled to feature the champion Jose Aldo and Conor McGregor in one of the most anticipated fights of 2015. You can see our full coverage below, and you can also listen to the call above.
What if Conor McGregor loses? He railed against superstitions in fighting, calling them a form of weakness. McGregor has managed to irritate Aldo and has also exchanged insults with Mendes. To the fans, this was a fight that they wanted to see since it was announced.
“This is a huge opportunity for me and I’m super-pumped for it”, said Mendes, whose only two career losses have come in championship fights against Aldo.
After sustaining a rib injury during his training camp last week Aldo was forced to pull out of UFC 189. McGregor is all too aware of the negativity, but once again, like questions about his ability to sprawl on a double-leg, it comes with the territory.
McGregor (17-2) has history with Mendes (17-2).
“I don’t know whether he’ll be back”.
Aldo’s news was announced on ESPN’s Sports Center yesterday. The victor will unify the 145-pound crown with Aldo when he’s ready to return.
“Four minutes into the first, Chad Mendes will be unconscious”, McGregor tweeted. Once the bout was on the docket, the two fighters did their part, engaging in a contentious feud painstakingly chronicled in what felt like a dozen UFC-produced documentaries. “We’ll take the B-level guy and we’ll still break records”. McGregor and Mendes are getting into it now.
While she has no issue with singing the Dublin fighter into his clash, late past year she revealed that she rewrote the Irish national anthem because she believed it is “very war-like”.

Conor didn’t get the chance to beat Aldo. He says he was beaten mentally before he was physically.
Mendes, meanwhile, will get another crack at UFC gold.
Better, in fact, than seeing McGregor take on some lesser, hobbled version of Aldo.
McGregor has never faced a wrestler the caliber of Mendes, who trains out of Urjah Faber’s Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, Calif. and wrestled collegiately at Cal Poly. “This is the McGregor show”, he said.
