BYU Cougars & Taysom Hill Can’t Catch a Break
BYU opened up a 24-14 lead going into halftime, but the Cornhuskers mounted a comeback and appeared to control the game, thanks to two third-quarter touchdowns. He’s spent the last two years on his Church of Latter Day Saints mission in Antofagasta, Chile.
Backup quarterback Tanner Mangum completed a Hail Mary on the game’s final play to give the Cougars an improbable 33-28 win at Nebraska, snapping the Cornhuskers’ 29-year opening game winning streak. More will come Monday. The transition to the highest level of college football has been pretty smooth, considering the Jaguars have already reached a bowl game, but you can’t walk into Lincoln as the No. 108 ranked football team in Division I and not get knocked around.
“We were doing quarterback drills and I looked over and they had some guys punting, and then they had a guy trying out after practice”, Broekemeier said.
Second recreation ball: Notre Dame quarterback Malik Zaire sizzled towards Texas, finishing 19 of 22 passes for 313 yards. “I felt I had made the right decision”. “I hope the best for “Foltzy” coming back, but you have to be ready”.
Coach Bronco Mendenhall figured Mangum’s arrival would be worth the wait.
Then Hill sprained his foot and was lost for the season.
The stunning last play spoiled the debut of new Nebraska coach Mike Riley.
Not that Hill would ever say as much about anyone; it’s just more or less assumed that Hill will now focus on his studies. The freshman was smiling and excited while the rest of BYU nation was anxious about Hill. So I rolled out and threw it. It wasn’t my best ball.
For the first time in what seemed like forever, the game between Utah and BYU in 2009 did not have any implications about who would win the Mountain West. Even so, the rivalry game always causes a lot of passion and intense play and 2009 was no different. With only 48 seconds left on the clock, Mangum orchestrated a drive to the Nebraska 42-yard line. Among the suspended BYU players were defensive lineman Tomasi Laulile, free safety Kai Nacua, linebacker Sione Takitaki and wide receiver Trey Dye. And had the Huskers got it done on a third-and-3 from the BYU with little more than a minute left, they’re in the victory formation. “We can’t let one game ruin everything”. Mangum shared co-MVP honors with Jameis Winston at the 2011 Elite 11 Camp for quarterbacks. The coach said it’s too early to know whether Hill, a fifth-year senior, will seek a medical hardship so he could play for BYU in 2016. Nutrition and workouts aren’t a priority while away.
“To Tanner’s credit, he has had to get caught up really fast, and it hasn’t been enough time to get completely caught up”. With 6 seconds left, and the Buffaloes trailing 26-21, Stewart, from his own 36, air-mailed the ball all the way to the end zone on the other side of the field where it was deflected into the hands of Michael Westbrook for the improbable catch. “It sucks to have that happen to you”, said Tommy Armstrong Jr. “Every rep I get, I am trying to visualize that it is in the game, so when the time comes and I am called upon, I can step in and do my job”.
The BYU offense will make tweaks to fit Mangum’s strengths.
Receiver Brandon Reilly said he senses that his teammates will bounce back from the loss. It’s who he is…. And you mix that with who he is and that gives us more stability at the spot.
