Maria Sharapova advances to Wimbledon semis with three set win
Kyrgios, a 26th-seeded Australian, reached the Wimbledon quarterfinals past year in his debut appearance.
Maria Sharapova summoned up all her fight to reach the Wimbledon semis, holding off an inspired mid-match surge from CoCo Vandeweghe in a Centre Court marathon. Her uncle, Kiki, was a two-time National Basteball Association All-Star, was the general manager for the Denver Nuggets and New Jersey Nets and is now the vice president of basketball operations for the National Basteball Association. Her grandmother, Colleen Kay Hutchins, was Miss America in 1952.
If it sounds a bit much to live up to, then it was, for a while. She led Williams in last month’s French Open before the top seed rallied for a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 victory. Fond of the odd burger – from In and Out Burger, to be exact – it took an epiphany early previous year to make her realise she needed to be more professional.
Coco Vandeweghe of the United States serves to Lucie Safarova of the Czech Republic during their singles match at the All England Lawn Tennis Championships in Wimbledon, London, Monday July 6, 2015.
Certainly her semi-final opponent has had an interesting ride. As a famous surname in American sport, it brought added pressure.
“Definitely no secrets between each other’s games”, Sharapova said. “I’m not going to argue against her words”. “My real name is Colleen”. I didn’t know he liked tennis. I have a younger brother who is Crash and a younger sister who is Honnie.
If Coco’s serve is on the money then we could be in for a very interesting match.
“Overall I’m happy I was able to take that loss and move up a few steps further this year”.
We have already seen the reigning champion and second-seed Petra Kvitová defeated, proving that – unlike in the men’s game – there is more potential for upsets on the women’s side. She said she didn’t believe she was doing it during the motion. “I can speak for myself. I strongly disagreed. Towards the later end of the second set, I said if she has a problem speaking to Maria, if she’s too scared to do it, I had no problem speaking to her”, said the American.
“I haven’t played Serena here in 11 years”.
Williams was in danger of a shock quarter-final exit after a slow start on Centre Court on Tuesday, but the five-time Wimbledon champion eventually battered 23rd seed Azarenka into submission in two hours and three minutes with a barrage of 43 winners and 14 aces.
But the American’s momentum was quickly squashed, as the fourth-seeded Russian broke serve in the second game, and after consolidating it with a hold, led 3-0.
“I had to regroup”.
Maria’s second serve hasn’t been as strong as usual as well, and the Russian has 28 double faults – 100 per cent more than her right-handed opponent’s record (14). The return will be extremely important.
“I didn’t really feel that good”, the New York-born 23-year-old told reporters.
The top-ranked Djokovic beat the 14th-seeded Anderson 7-5 in the fifth set on Court 1 to complete a match that had been suspended by darkness at two sets apiece.
Muguruza beat Switzerland’s Timea Bacsinszky 7-5 6-3 to reach her first major semi-final.
