California Governor Signs Bill Limiting School Vaccine Exemptions

California Governor Jerry Brown signed a law Tuesday that no longer allows parents to use religious or personal reasons to not vaccinate their children.

The law make California the third USA state to eliminate a personal-belief exemption for vaccinations. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) and New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said that parents should have some choice as to whether they vaccinate their children.

Kaiser Permanente’s Physician in Chief said “Vaccination is a very very important public health measure because it protects our children and adults from infectious diseases”. However, Brown noted that any “medical intervention” has risk.

Two other states, West Virginia and Mississippi, have similar vaccination requirements. In 2012 the governor, a Jesuit seminarian in his youth, had insisted on a special exemption for religious beliefs before signing a bill requiring parents to consult with a health professional in order to opt out of vaccinating their children.

The law mandates vaccines for all children attending public school “for the eventual achievement of total immunization”.

The bill was introduced after a massive measles outbreak at Disneyland infected over 100 people in the United States past year.

When asked about the new law, supporters of the legislation said it would likely spark more changes across other states.

Lawmakers who supported the legislation, including co-sponsor Sen.

The school vaccine issue has sparked one of the most heated legislative debates of the year, with thousands of parents taking to social media and flooding the Capitol in recent weeks to protest. Herd immunity for measles is between 92 and 94 percent, according to the USA Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
