US Open: Indo-Swiss Pair Sania and Martina Through to Semis
India’s tennis queen Sania Mirza remained on course for her second successive Grand Slam title after reaching the semifinals of the US Open with Swiss partner Martina Hingis, here.
The top seeds defeated Hao-Ching Chan and Yung-Jan Chan 7-6(5) 6-1 in the quarterfinals.
The duo of Martina Hingis and Sania Mirza will cross swords against 11th seeded Italian pair of Sara Errani and Flavia Pannetta who ousted 15th seeded pair of Lara Arruabarrena (Spain) anb Andreja Klepac (Slovakia) 6-0, 5-7, 6-2.
The first set was a tense affair and the issue was resolved in tie-breaker which went in favour of Martina-Sania. They lost two service games and Sania and Martina did not give them a chance to claw back.
On Wednesday, Inglot and Lindstedt took 44 minutes to win the first set and 36 minutes to take the second.
In the opening set, the top seeds broke their rivals once and sent down 14 winners as compared to the eight by Krajicek and Strycova to grab the advantage in 33 minutes. Bopanna and Mergea committed 13 unforced errors, one less than the winning duo. The pair had won the Wimbledon in this July.
