Author apologises for saying Idris Elba ‘too street’ to play James Bond
“Idris Elba is a terrific actor, but I can think of other black actors who would do it better”, Horowitz said in an exclusive interview with the Daily Mail.
Horowitz, who has been the target of online hatred and threats over his remarks, said on Tuesday that it “wasn’t my intention” to cause offense and that he is “mortified” that he “clumsily…chose the word “street”.
However, Anthony’s comments angered Idris’ fans, who were quick to express their views on the micro-blogging site.
But later that afternoon, having felt the brunt of the Internet’s rage, Horowitz recanted, tweeting an apology that read, “I admit it was a poor choice of word”. While he looked past Elba for Bond, the audio version for Horowitz’s Bond debut, Trigger Mortis, will be voiced by David Oyelowo as Bond. In the wide-ranging interview, Horowitz made it known that he had some strong opinions about Bond’s big screen exploits, and that included criticizing the popular choice to replace Craig.
It’s hard to think that, if Idris Elba isn’t the right guy for the job, black or not, that there might be some aversion to making James Bond a black guy.
He continued, “For me, Idris Elba is a bit too rough to play the part”.
“Honestly, it’s a rumor that’s really starting to eat itself”, he said during an appearance at London’s British Film Institute in April.
“I blame Daniel”, he joked. I really don’t know.
Idris Elba has in the past, stated that he would love to play the role of James Bond. “At the moment I can’t even conceive it”. Many believe this is a racist assessment of Idris’ talents as an actor, whose career has varied in roles throughout the years.
