Harry Shearer Returns to Simpsons
According to a statement released by producers Matt Groening, James L. Brooks, and Jean after news of Shearer’s exit broke, the actor had received the same contract that the other cast members had signed. Not only did he say the “show will go on”, but he implied that Shearer’s characters would also be recast with “the finest voiceover talent available.”
The Simpsons’ 27th season airs on September 27. Shearer lends his voice to Montgomery Burns, Ned Flanders, Waylon Smithers, Dr. Hibbert, and Kent Brockman, among many others.
Harry Shearer is now returning for the 27th and 28th seasons of The Simpsons, after quitting the animated series in May.
The contracts are said to span four seasons at a time, and rumor has it their value exceeds $300,000 per episode.
The Emmy-winning actor announced his departure in May after 26 years on the hit show, which debuted with Shearer in 1989. “So we’ve never kept him from doing that stuff.’ “.
Ultimately, while The Simpsons isn’t the show it once was, I’m at least relieved that Shearer will be sticking around.
Along with a photo of several characters cheering, the official Twitter account of “The Simpsons” tweeted, “We are extremely pleased to announce that all principal cast members of #TheSimpsons have now been signed”.
At the time via social media, Shearer cited “the freedom to do other work” as the reason behind his decision to leave.
Simpsons executive producer Al Jean told EW the following day that he found that tweet confusing, saying, “Everybody on the show does lots of outside projects”. It isn’t clear whether these latest contracts offer any more leniency to meets Shearer’s wants. “We’re still trying. Harry, no kidding, let’s talk”.
