Stephen Colbert Trumps Fallon, Kimmel, and Letterman in Ratings With ‘Late
Colbert wouldn’t be Colbert without politics – and his first show was no exception.
The writing was poor, there were product placements (Oreos had some native advertising going on), and the guests (George Clooney and Jeb Bush, who Colbert sucked up to) seemed stilted with lousy gags.
“He (Seinfeld) said, ‘These cars are so cool to me because they don’t care what the other vehicle companies are doing”. Colbert then presented him with a belated wedding gift, a paperweight with the inscription “I don’t know you“.
The dynamic duo used this as an excuse for some more mischief however, with the former ER favourite pretending to be hawking a fake film called Decision Strike.
Stephen Colbert and George Clooney talk on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert“. The battle between Leno and Letterman was enough to put a chill in the air when anyone talked about late night rivals, but Jimmy Fallon made a guest appearance on the debut last night, seemingly squashing any feuds.
“I’m just here to see you”.
Colbert wasted no time in answering this question directly on his CBS debut.
George Clooney joked about being the “arm candy” to wife Amal with Stephen Colbert.
The two men also share a manager. Letterman’s final show earlier this year pulled in 13.76 million viewers, proving yet again that finales will always beat premieres. “I just think he’s wrong on a lot of issues”. Bush even told Colbert that he will bring people together and complimented President Barack Obama. “It was fantastic. It was joyful. It was everything we expected and more”.
I wrote up my first impressions of the show in the wee hours of the morning. “I mean he was prepped, ready to go”.
Colbert showed off the spiffy, newly decorated Ed Sullivan Theater. Comic Amy Schumer, actress Scarlett Johansson and author Stephen King also are on the schedule.
