Former NY Giants player Tyler Sash found dead at 27
The cause of death yet to be confirmed but no foul play is suspected.
The 27-year-old Sash was found dead Tuesday in his hometown of Oskaloosa.
“I took a prescription drug (Adderall) legally under a doctor’s care for an anxiety condition during the off-season in March of this year”, Sash said in a statement.
“It is a tragedy and I can not explain how saddened I am by his loss”, he said. He also appeared in all four of the team’s post season games in 2011, including Super Bowl XLVI, collecting seven total tackles. He played in all 16 games as a rookie, primarily on special teams. Sash was with the Giants for two seasons and cut in August 2013.
In 2014 after retiring from the National Football League, he was arrested for public intoxication after leading the police on a scooter chase.
We are awaiting additional information about what happened to Sash. He was fined $65. Court records suggest he ran into some financial problems this year. Twitter users surmised Sash, 27, committed suicide or overdosed, though authorities have made no mention of these theories.
Any death at such a young age always raises questions – so how did Tyler Sash die?
How very sad. New York Giants fans are feeling mighty blue today.
Iowa coach Kirk Ferentz abruptly canceled his weekly press conference Tuesday for what spokesman Steve Roe said was a “a private issue regarding the Iowa football program, unrelated to game preparation”.
“As player rep, all former players go through me to do some housecleaning stuff, and I’ve helped him along with worker’s comp information and some friendly texts here and there, ” said DeOssie, whose eyes moistened as he spoke of Sash.
Iowa State plans to recognize Sash with a moment of silence Saturday when the Hawkeyes and Cyclones play for their annual game at Jack Trice Stadium in Ames.
Sash had an 86-yard interception return for a touchdown in a 2009 win over Indiana, which ranks fifth longest in school history.
Sash joined the Giants for the 2011 season, a sixth round pick out of Iowa. He said he had not kept in close contact with Sash recently.
