Baby dies after being left inside SUV by family who unloaded groceries
Lauderhill police are investigating after an 11-month-old was found unresponsive in a hot sport utility vehicle Wednesday evening.
The auto was parked at a Lauderhill apartment complex on the 3100 block of NW 19th Street.
According to police, after the family finished unloading groceries, at least an hour had gone by before realizing the 11-month-old was inside this Blue Explorer.
“The family is very, very upset”.
The parents and four other children were unloading food and forgot to get the child out of the sports utility vehicle, said Lauderhill police spokesman Gregory Solowsky. They are now with the police, and officials at this time are treating this as a “tragic accident”.
The family is distraught and cooperating fully with investigators.
“Children are obviously much more susceptible to heat than grown adults, so it is imperative that the members of our community see what’s going on here today and learn from it”, Solowsky said.
Solowsky says paramedics continued to administer CPR on the way to the hospital, but the child was declared dead Wednesday evening.
Police said at this point it’s too early to determine whether charges will be filed.
