A 2nd Northern Ireland fan has died at Euro 2016
Scoring the goal which sealed Northern Ireland’s first ever win at a European Championship finals was “the best moment” of winger Niall McGinn’s life.
Northern Ireland’s final game in Group C is on Tuesday against Germany in Paris and they will be hoping that this victory can spur them on to get something from this game which will see them qualify from the group. We won’t be afraid of this game at all. We expect to have the ball for a very long in the game.
FAI CEO John Delaney said: “This is a sad outcome to what was a historic day for Northern Irish football following their victory over Ukraine”.
Elsewhere, England beat Wales 2-1 in Lens to go top of Group B, with striker Daniel Sturridge scoring the victor in the 92nd minute.
“If Jose Mourinho or Roy Hodgson did it they would be hailed as a magician”. So the sight of Vardy and Sturridge walking on for the second half, instead of Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling, was little short of astonishing.
Germany, though, are not assured of top spot in the group following a goalless draw against Poland last time out and Die Mannschaft will be determined to pick up all three points from their meeting with O’Neill’s men.
Vardy levelled in the 56th minute and Sturridge rifled home the victor from a similarly close range in stoppage time.
When the players returned after the game was halted for two minutes because of the brief hailstorm, Viktor Kovalenko fired a shot just wide from the edge of the penalty area and a second from similar range minutes later.
Gareth Bale opened the scoring for Wales and almost took them to a historic win over England in Thursday’s Euro 2016 clash.
“I think we maybe gave Poland too much respect in the game early on and then we found it hard to get that intensity back”.
Northern Ireland have failed to find the net in any of their last seven defeats and O’Neill’s outfit may well struggle to make their mark again when they go head-to-head with the world champions in Paris. “The noise the fans created was spectacular, but it was even greater when we scored”. I have an agent to look at that side of things. “It’s just sinking in, and now it means staying in the tournament”.
The current Northern Ireland side may not quite possess the flair of their celebrated predecessors of 1982, but according to their coach Michael O’Neill, few Euro 2016 teams can match their heart and commitment.
Fellow Northern Ireland supporters rushed to help the 64-year-old Belfast man. “This puts any result of a football match into perspective”.
In Marseille, three Russian fans have been jailed for their part in the violence that marred their team’s opening match against England.
