A ideal nightmare for Wenger may yet get worse!
Arsenal’s midfield injury crisis worsened at The Hawthorns as they slid to their first Premier League defeat for two months.
The Baggies clinched their first home win over the Gunners in 10 years after Santi Cazorla slipped and missed a late penalty.
“Oxlade-Chamberlain had a little setback on Monday but we checked by scan and there’s nothing too wrong”, Wenger said.
James Morrison equalised and Arteta put the ball in his own net minutes later to hand WBA the lead on a platter. The own goal from Arteta, and the crucial misses from Cazorla and Campbell cost Arsenal a victory.
But as soon as talk of a legitimate title challenge came to the fore, the old Arsenal have made a return.
But despite dominating long periods of the game they were unable to shake off the Pulis curse, with Cazorla producing a carbon copy of David Beckham’s penalty miss in Turkey to leave Wenger bewildered. “The difference between the teams has narrowed and that today it’s more how close you can be to your best that will decide the result than the team you play against”. How much did it affect them? “But I don’t really know what happened. I would not explain our defeat by that”.
There was little opportunity for the Spaniard to make amends as he hobbled off early in the second half – just after Ozil had been inches away from making it 2-2 with a low effort against the base of the post.
We certainly are not happy, and not just because we lost out on the three points.
Tony Pulis’ side have been uncharacteristically leaky at the back at home, conceding 12 goals in six games, meaning they have won just once and lost four of their six matches in front of their own fans. “I thought Arsenal were very good, particularly second half when they ramped it up”. They have played lots of games. “On top of our bad result today, we have injuries”.
Wenger firmly believes that his team has what it takes to taste Premier League glory once again, and with quality in all areas of the pitch, it is easy to see why. It’s a double-touch apparently and that’s what he’s given. “He actually kicked it twice”.
Sanchez flung himself to the floor under Brunt’s touch, but Pulis said: “It wasn’t a soft as a few of the penalties given against us this year”.
