A Less-United Kingdom: ‘Brexit’ Vote Revives Talk Of UK Breakup
England and Wales voted clearly to leave the European Union on Thursday.
The campaign to leave the European Union won with 52 percent of the vote, and the national election produced a high turnout, with 72 percent of the more than 46 million registered voters casting a ballot.
The referendum will be decided purely on whether “Leave” or “Remain” receives the most votes across the country.
Talking about the distribution of votes across the UK, Curtice said that London has a young, more educated demographic and those are all characteristics that tended to promote a relatively high vote to remain because young graduates are the keenest on remaining.
Mr Salmond told the BBC he was “quite certain Nicola Sturgeon would implement the SNP manifesto”. The turnout across the country was 72%.
“Scotland looks like its going to vote solidly Remain”.
She added: “We await the final UK-wide result, but Scotland has spoken – and spoken decisively”.
UKIP leader Nigel Farage said the dawn was breaking on an “independent United Kingdom”, and predicted that “this will be a victory for real people”.
With the pound falling from 1 dollar 50 just after the polls close to I dollar 34 this morning – it’s biggest fall for 30 years – the debate has already begun about what the result remains for the Government, and Scotland’s place in the UK.
But there were big wins for Remain in heavily-populated areas such as Aberdeen, Dundee, North Lanarkshire, South Lanarkshire, Fife and West Lothian.
In East Ayrshire, the vote was 58.641.4% for Remain, compared to 41.4%.
The pound also fell against other major currencies, and the cost of hedging against sharp swings in sterling over the next week rose back to where it was before the polls closed.
He further said that while it’s fair to say that on balance the opinion polls pointed to a narrow Remain victory, it’s not true that all the polls were pointing towards a Remain victory and while “Remain side were slightly the favorites – certainly nobody could rule out the possibility of the United Kingdom voting to leave which is of course exactly what happened”, Curtice said.
The pound had risen sharply against the dollar but started to fall dramatically after early results in England showed Leave doing better than expected.
About 46.5 million people were registered to vote on Thursday – including four million in Scotland – in what is the third nationwide referendum in Britain’s history.
The official result of the referendum will be declared at Manchester Town Hall, with the exact time dependent on the level of turnout and how close the result is.
