A look at Mark Richt’s career
“It’s bigger than us”.
Other fans said the firing, just the latest firing this year, doesn’t come as a huge surprise given the climate of college sports. He’s a great coach….
There perhaps isn’t a higher-profile Group of Five head coach than Houston’s Tom Herman.
Several other players declined to comment, but some did decide to weigh on Twitter following the team meeting.
The most important thing that Mark Richt did was as a man, not as a coach.
“The pressure’s on McGarity”, said Vickery. It was clear after the game that Richt had no plans to step down.
“I see where I am, Georgia sees where they are, and everybody is going to do what they think is in the best interest of having success in the future, so that’s kind of how I look at it”, Richt said. The Gators seem to be out of their short funk under Will Muschamp, while Georgia keep trotting in the same spot.
Moreover, the Bulldogs often found themselves on the wrong end of head-scratching losses under Richt, setbacks that sometimes kept the program out of national title contention during the BCS era.
Flood was suspended for three games this season for making inappropriate contact with a professor regarding a player’s academics. Richt, a two-time SEC Coach of the Year, fell victim to the lofty expectations that come with the territory of being an SEC head football coach in this day and age.
Lassiter High School graduate Hutson Mason played for Richt from 2010 to 2014 and served as the Bulldogs’ starting quarterback in 2014, leading the team to a 10-3 record and a win in the postseason Belk Bowl. “My family and I are truly humbled”.
“I love him and I’ll miss him at Georgia”.
“I don’t know what the world is coming to in our profession”.
As for who will take over at Georgia now that Mark Richt is gone, there are a bevy of options.
Richt is 145-51 with two SEC championships; only Vince Dooley (201) won more at Georgia.
Now, his future as Georgia’s coach will include only one game. “However, his impact on college football goes well beyond the gridiron”. According to one person with knowledge of the situation, Georgia quietly made moves to start a coaching search over the last week. It wasn’t just that the Bulldogs lost; it’s how they lost.
ESPN’s Mark Schlabach was the first to report that Georgia had fired Richt.
“Coach Richt’s record speaks for itself”, said Bailey.
Georgia will hold a press conference Monday.
Many coaches will surely be interested in Georgia, although there are a handful of obvious names to follow, including Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart – a former Georgia player – and Mississippi State coach Dan Mullen, who has likely hit the Bulldogs’ ceiling. Smart’s also a Georgia graduate, having played for the Bulldogs from 1995-98, and understands the culture in Athens extremely well. Mullen was former Florida head coach Urban Meyer’s offensive coordinator, and McGarity worked under Florida athletics director Jeremy Foley.
There was reported dysfunction on the coaching staff this year, and Richt botched his offensive coordinator hiring, bringing in Brian Schottenheimer to replace Mike Bobo, who left for Colorado State.
