A man accused of murdering an alleged former mob boss
Police have said Zito was pronounced dead after suffering a gunshot wound in a house on Toronto’s west end.
“Domenico Scopelliti, 51 years old of Toronto, heard his name on 680 NEWS in relation to this incident and turned himself into 12 Division homicide investigators”, Const. Craig Brister said Saturday.
Police have not given a motive for Friday’s fatal shooting of a man reported to have ties with the mafia.
Sources told CTV’s Tamara Cherry that Zito was a mob boss who had retired from his alleged involvement in organized crime.
Zito worked as a waiter shortly after coming to Canada in the 1960s and later listed his occupation as a ceramic tile saleman.
He was also involved in money-lending and was sentenced to four and a half years in prison in 1986, after pleading guilty to manslaughter for clubbing a man to death with a liqueur bottle, over an unpaid debt. Italian police say the ‘Ndrangheta operates the biggest cocaine smuggling network in Europe.
Zito was born into a ‘Ndrangheta crime family in Fiumara, Calabria, in 1928.
Zito twice tried to illegally immigrate to the United States – once as a stowaway on a ship headed to NY – before he eventually entered Canada legally in the mid-1950s.
Since then, Zito had taken a backseat, Nicaso said.
