A’s acquire OF Khris Davis from Brewers for two prospects
The Milwaukee Brewers have acquired catcher Jacob Nottingham and right-handed pitcher Bubba Derby from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for outfielder Khris Davis.
Originally selected by Houston in the sixth round of the 2013 First-Year Player Draft, Nottingham was dealt to Oakland this past July 23 as part of a trade for left-handed pitcher Scott Kazmir.
The Brewers feel a strong farm system is important to the rebuilding effort. It opens left field for Domingo Santana, a highly regarded player with budding power who is five years younger than Davis. Nottingham, who turns 21 in April, is the 66th-rated prospect on the Baseball Prospectus Top-101 list.
Trading Davis makes sense for the Brewers. Nottingham gives the Brewers a top-level catching prospect in their organization who eventually could succeed Jonathan Lucroy.
Davis batted.247/.323/.505 with 27 home runs and 66 RBIs in 121 games last season. Known as a streaky hitter with prodigious power, he compiled 22 homers and 69 RBI in 144 games in ’14 but is OPS dropped to.756.
Derby, 21, posted a 1.21 ERA in 37 1/3 innings last season between rookie and Single-A ball.
The addition of Davis also means Canha, who had 16 homers and 70 RBIs to go with a.254/.315/.426 slash line in his rookie season, will be going up against Crisp in the competition for at-bats.
He is under team control through 2019 and isn’t eligible for arbitration until next winter, the kind of target the A’s often search for in trades.
In a move earlier in the day, right-hander Blaine Boyer signed a minor-league deal with an invitation to major-league camp.
Boyer, 33, made 68 appearances in relief for the Minnesota Twins in 2015.
