A’s beat Orioles 3-2 to drop Baltimore into first-place tie
Miley (7-10) pitched well but remained winless since arriving from Seattle a day before the trade deadline. It was the only vulnerability Gallardo showed in his six innings of work, but the right-hander, who has never beaten Oakland, would wind up falling 0-5 against the A’s. Oakland cleanup hitter Khris Davis is just 1-for-10 in the series and has gone eight games without a homer.TV: 3:35 p.m. ET, MLB Network, MASN (Baltimore) PITCHING MATCHUP: Orioles RH Chris Tillman (14-4, 3.50 ERA) vs. Athletics RH Andrew Triggs (0-0, 5.35) Tillman lost just twice over his first 21 outings before going 0-2 with a 5.94 ERA over his plast three turns.
“It’s been all week”.
“It’s one of those times of the year when we can’t find the breaks”. “None of us are what we were at 24, 25, but he’s a guy that knows how to pitch”. Machado delivered a sacrifice fly right after that to give Baltimore a 1-0 lead.
“I mean it’s hard”. We’re squaring balls up, which is the best part about it. We’re having good at bats.
“I saw on Major League Baseball today that they led the A.L.in homers, so I knew I just had to keep the ball down and mix my speeds”, he said.
“Things like that are going to happen”, Gallardo said of the Orioles’ offensive struggles. He took advantage of the opportunity he got tonight.
“It was way more than we expected”, manager Bob Melvin said of Detwiler’s game.
And with two out in the third inning, Marcus Semien doubled over the head of center fielder Adam Jones and scored on Yonder Alonso double to right off Baltimore starter Yovani Gallardo. Gausman is still looking for his first road win of 2016 and is 0-7 with a 5.62 ERA in 11 starts away from home.Graveman had a string of five straight quality starts come to an end when he was knocked around for six runs on nine hits – two homers – in four innings at the Los Angeles Angels on Wednesday. Gausman struck out six and allowed two runs over six innings.
“This game is tough”. I wouldn’t say it was a chore before, but you just went to the field and it was a job. The 30-year-old Detwiler (1-0) stepped up big Wednesday, holding a powerful Orioles lineup to just six hits. “You don’t think at that time that’s going to be a key play in the game but it ended up being one”. Baltimore fell out of a tie for first place with Toronto in the American League East and trail by one game.
Adam Jones led off the first with a single against Detwiler.
Danny Valencia, also out of position playing right field, teamed up with Muncy on a flawless relay challenging Jones at home. And even considering those screwups, Jones still beat the ball to home plate, except he managed to slide into home plate without actually touching home with his front foot.
“It’s not like he struck us out”, Jones said. It’s a bang-bang play.
The Orioles got two runners on with two outs in the fourth. Third baseman Ryon Healy managed to dodge a shattered bat to make a barehand grab and throw to get Jonathan Schoop in the fifth. Wieters flied to right to end the inning.
That was enough for Detwiler who was added by Oakland (51-63).
Tiresome retired three batters and Ryan Madson worked the ninth for his 23rd save.
After Detwiler departed, John Axford pitched the ninth for his second save of the season. “It’s just not landing, so we just have to take that as a positive and take it out tomorrow”.
