A Second Night of Chicago Protests Over Police Shooting
They say a Black Friday protest aimed at shutting down a major downtown shopping area will send a message by hitting Chicago where it hurts – in the pocketbook.
The release of the graphic video Tuesday evening inspired protests, during which five people were arrested.
“Prosecuting police officers is always very challenging and I’m certain they wanted to know if there were other witnesses that’d seen what happened before and maybe had it from a different angle”, he said.
Herbert has said his client was closest to McDonald, and in the most vulnerable position.
The 37-year-old has been a Chicago police officer since 2001. All three are from Chicago.
Van Dyke was charged with first-degree murder Tuesday. Within seconds, Van Dyke begins firing. The offer to be held in isolation is made to all inmates, and most frequently taken by members with gang ties, said Benjamin Breit, a sheriff’s department spokesman.
“Indict, convict, send the killer cops to jail”, people shouted as they marched about half a mile to the Chicago Police Department.
“This situation is not isolated”, Jedidiah Brown, founder of the Chicago-based Young Leaders Alliance, said of the killing of McDonald, who prosecutors say was shot repeatedly even after he had fallen to the ground and appeared to be incapacitated.
McCarthy said there was never audio for the shooting video. There were a few tense moments, and at least two people were arrested. But you have to understand it. Again, effective leadership is knowing how to direct and redirect it. That’s what we need to be focusing on. Prosecutors say Van Dyke was the only officer to open fire.
“It’s going to take true, true repentance”, Rush said after viewing the video.
The police dashboard camera videos also shed new light on how the events unfolded leading up to McDonald’s death by showing police response to the incident from new perspectives.
Alvarez described the video, as grim.
“We have watched in anger and disappointment as the city has covered up police violence”, CTU Vice President Jesse Sharkey said in a statement.
The video shows him holding a knife when the police cars arrive and Mr Van Dyke emerges from his auto. There were 16 shots fired over 15 seconds, all by Van Dyke.
Alvarez said Tuesday she chose to announce the charges against Van Dyke earlier than planned because of the video’s release. In April, Chicago’s city council approved a $5 million settlement for McDonald’s family over his death.
Police have reported that McDonald had a 3-inch knife and according to toxicology tests, had PCP in his system.
In Chicago, Van Dyke turned himself in to authorities Tuesday and has been charged with first degree murder. Video footage appears to show the teen retreating from the officers before he was killed.
Federal authorities in a news release issued Wednesday night said they’re still investigating the incident.
The “chilling” video is the latest in a string of police shootings caught on camera that have sparked mass – and sometimes violent – protests and engulfed the United States in a debate over racism and the use of deadly force by police.
