‘A Star is Born’ could be an early Oscar contender
Speaking of the Streisand version, Cooper’s film makes many obvious nods to it: Jackson’s Kris Kristofferson look; an examination of Gaga’s big handsome nose (just like Streisand’s) and even a moment including fake eyebrows. Those who have survived alcoholism and those who have endured the abuse of alcoholics, will see the remnants of their frayed experience in Jackson’s good intentions and Ally’s dedication.
In addition, Gaga’s powerful vocals are on full display, leaving no doubt that Ally is destined to be a star. Like all substance abusers, Jack’s behavior is unforgivable-he says bad things to Ally and embarrasses her with his loutish actions.
But A Star Is Born may ignite fervor in the Academy for more reasons than just its straight white maleness. The singer takes her under “his wing” and begins to perform with her in Duo. It’s only later that we come to grasp at just how lost Jackson actually is. Cooper continues the legacy and breaks my broken heart. Along with the hurt and embarrassment that Jackson causes Ally due to his own problems, the film also showcases the depth of the love and admiration that they both have for each other. So much so that the film is cast with people he loves off-screen including his audiologist, a high school friend, Dave Chappelle and even his dog. Bradley Cooper‘s off-screen friendship with GaGa perfectly melds their on-screen chemistry and dueling vulnerabilities. It’s pretty much love at first sight for Jackson, but Ally is wary.
The Warner Bros rep told Vanity Fair that they live in “a house on Kensington Road in the Angelino Heights/Echo Park area, which became the house where Ally lives with her father, a limousine driver who operates his business from home”.
Cooper, Cooper, Oh my talented Cooper!
The final scene of the movie is undoubtedly the saddest and most heartbreaking scene of the movie.
On the acting front, the three-time Oscar nominee balances devotion and inner demons convincingly, and his eyes drip a exhausted melancholy that’s unreachable and quietly heartbreaking. Was it really his debut?
After the film’s opening concert performance (filmed at Coachella in 2017), Jackson heads to Ally’s drag bar and, through an alcohol haze, witnesses her stirring version of “La Vie En Rose”. I know the lady is already a star, but in this film, she’s a constellation. As an actor, she is a revelation: incredibly naturalistic, not a hint of artifice or discomfort.
James Arthur covers Lady Gaga’s “I’ll Never Love Again”. I just got in my auto and started driving.
It also dominated at the global box office with US$125.2 million, setting an worldwide record for an October opening. As his brother/manager, Bobby (Sam Elliott employing his signature swagger), tries to help Jack, his efforts are in vain. There is a scene in which he gives no dialogue, just look back and reverse his vehicle # 8211; IT # 8217; HEART KEY! This is an easy part to play safe, but Cooper brings a sense of realism to the role.
Bradley Cooper is outstanding as Jack. Attraction is one powerful current, though, and Ally chooses to “dive in” anyway, hoping Jackson will truly “let the old ways die” in order to clean up and show up for her. This film is certainly Bradley Cooper’s baby, and for a directorial debut, it’s beyond incredible. Second, there are spoilers below and trust me you don’t want to spoil this movie for yourself.
A star isn’t born in Gaga’s performance, but rather revitalized and propelled to new heights. He says through the songs what he can do not to say through words; the climax will whisper in the ear and tear you apart! it is for all that is in it.
