“A Very Murray Christmas” Premieres Today on Netflix
(He also won in the Golden Globes and Baftas). TIME caught up with Coppola to discuss the film’s cast, working with Bill Murray, and how Paul McCartney nearly ended up in the film. But just out of loving to see Bill and doing something musical around the holiday, to do something joyful.
“I still love movies and I love watching (TV) series but I don’t have an idea that I want to do a series”. He has a romantic, sensitive side and I saw that in Groundhog Day.
In the musical program, Murray sings and celebrates the holidays with friends after a blizzard shuts down production of a holiday broadcast.
As it turns out, Murray has come a long way from his days as Nick Winters on Saturday Night Live. For this, it’s fun to embrace an old fashioned classic uptown New York Christmas. I was saying to Bill, ‘Can’t you do a week at the cafe singing Christmas standards?’ And somehow it morphed into a Christmas TV special. Given that Sofia Coppola is involved, the entire project boasts a stylish, modern sheen and a knowing wink. It was kind of a insane group of people we assembled because of him. He misheard it as “the dustbusters” and told them to come back later. “I don’t think he considers himself a great vocalist but he’s got a lot of style”.
Rick Ross fails to show, which is why George Clooney ends up coming the closest to rapping that we will ever witness.
Miley came very last-minute. But I know he’s there when I need him. He’s even named a handbag after her. Warbling like a sozzled lounge singer, Murray chimes in with “keep movin’ on!” and “you’ve got to move on!” right on cue in this homespun-for-the-hipster-set delight.
Directing, I find writing harder.
With 7.3 IMDb rating scored from 28 votes, A Very Murray Christmas is all set to rock and roll out on Netflix as its holiday special of winter season. No, I’m thinking more along “The Carol Burnett Show” lines, but in the key of Murray, which is to say dolci yet dolente with moments of capriccio.
[Laughs] I was always surprised that became such a thing.
She also acknowledges it’s easier being with a musician. It took persuading, but then they found a song they liked. “Force majeure”, Poehler’s producer cries as she scuttles off (possibly the first time that phrase has been uttered in a holiday special), leaving Murray to wander the dim recesses of the hotel mixing it up with waitresses, mending love affairs, eating the defrosting food and offering folks, including Jenny Lewis, Maya Rudolph and the Pogues, an opportunity to sing songs singed as much by torch as Yule log. Her beloved father is also frequently involved in the financing, though this one was funded through Netflix. “With all the cheer that’s around, you can still feel pretty melancholy”.
On reflection, it stands to reason that Coppola would use a platform like Netflix for her latest venture. Adorning a lovely long-sleeved, white dress laced with pearls and studs and knee-high socks which benefited from the same detailing, Cyrus’ look was reserved – nearly classy considering her antics.
After living for some time in Paris, Coppola and her family are now based in NY.
It was! We shot in February or whenever that big snowstorm was. There were some different versions [I’d written] but we thought it was stronger to have it just be between them. I want them to do whatever they want to do.
