A West Virginia Player Caught A Touchdown And Then Obliterated A Maryland
The West Virginia Mountaineers and Oklahoma Sooners meet Saturday at Memorial Stadium. And for heavy underdog Maryland, it’s about maintaining control in front of a sellout crowd on the road. And though he threw four touchdowns against South Florida in his first start of the season, Rowe has been plagued by interceptions this season.
Caleb Rowe will be Maryland’s starting quarterback when the Terrapins take the field Saturday against Michigan in College Park, head coach Randy Edsall said during a teleconference with the media on Sunday afternoon. This was billed as a showdown between two long-time rivals, but instead we got a laughable blowout. “We’re forcing turnovers and we’re putting pressure on the quarterback”, he said.
West Virginia is the heavy favorite to win this game (17.5) and rightfully so.
“I got moved to running back a little bit then decided maybe this isn’t going to work out”, Howard said.
In the rare moments the offense wasn’t overwhelming Maryland, the defense was. This game will feature the nation’s second-leading passer, Baker Mayfield (1,062 yards, 10 TDs). “He has to be better and everybody around him – the offensive line, the running backs and the wide receivers all have to be better”.
In their final non-conference game of the regular season, the Mountaineers (3-0) gained 601 total yards, ran just shy of 100 plays and had 37 first downs, the last of which broke a program single-game record set in 1923. West Virginia’s defense is so suffocating that one team couldn’t even muster a shot against them. Going into last week’s practice, everyone was focused.
Scouting the run defense: The Mountaineers like to spread opponents out and use a more balanced attack than in years past. West Virginia was methodical, averaging 6.4 yards per play and holding the ball for more than 36 minutes.
No longer is he the anonymous specialist, an afterthought only talked about the handful of times he sees the field in a game; rather, this soft-spoken junior who made two winning field goals last season is viewed both as a crucial part of the team and as one of Football Bowl Subdivision’s most reliable kickers. They’ll have a tough time getting a grip on nimble Skylar Howard who makes quick short and intermediate throws, and minimizes mistakes.
-DB Antwaine Carter, a special teams standout, was lost for the season with a Lisfranc injury.
The Terps were forced to punt the ball on five of their first half drives, and turned it over on four others.
“You need guys, when things go bad because life is hard, to not give up, not say this wasn’t supposed to be this way because of entitlement or whatever it is”, Holgorsen said. Quinton Jefferson leads the way with 3.5 sacks and Ngakoue Yannick has three.
