A Wrinkle In Time With Jennifer Lee
The three children are guided by a trio of celestial beings: Mrs. If DuVernay communicates that idea well within her movie, she embodies it through her aesthetic.
A Disney movie starring Oprah Winfrey and Reese Witherspoon with a drop of Chris Pine mixed in…how could it not be good? She’s not only the first black woman to helm a major film with a budget exceeding $100 million, but she’s also a newcomer to the genre itself, which creates its own layer of challenge. That might be in part because, outside of some TV movies for Oxygen and animated voice work, she’s limited her projects and only acted in a handful of notable films. A simple walk around Meg and Charles Wallace’s neighborhood shows people of several cultural backgrounds living there. It’s a means of liberation for a Chinese housewife who is moved to rise out of her powerless life when she discovers her husband is having an affair. All of this is great – it’s necessary and frankly embarrassing that it took this long to happen – but none of it actually has any bearing on the content of A Wrinkle in Time.
Meg learns this when she’s visited by three other-worldly deities/creatures/beings/what-are-these-things?, known as the Mrs. – Mrs. “So I was nervous about striking the balance between mystique and authenticity”. It fills my heart, every time I think about Ava and her dreads and her sneakers and these big cranes and all of these men running around, taking direction from her.
“We’re talking a lot about how girls of color will respond to Storm, but Caucasian boys will also be seeing seeds planted in the film”, DuVernay continues. It’s the difference between my successes, which I’ve been able to achieve somewhat effortlessly and those [successes] that did not come so effortlessly.
‘But it’s also everyone behind the camera making the movie with the most diverse crew I have ever worked with in my life.
See more from our Q&A with Mbatha-Raw below. It’s nearly certainly a flaw that stems from the story’s written origins, but A Wrinkle in Time proves to be stunningly passive for a movie where a bunch of little kids hang out inside a volcano with Zach Galifianakis. I was in NY and I was working on Broadway and I said, ‘They’re gonna tap my shoulder and tell me to get out, They’re gonna be like what are you doing here?’ But I keep going back to that thing of saying if I’m feeling this way, all I need to do is acknowledge I’m feeling this way and take myself out of the equation.
At first, though, Lee talked me through how she got involved with the film. “We have to just keep acknowledging that”.
One handsome surprise for adults and children alike is the diversity of the cast – and how nobody even makes a big deal of it. You spend the majority of the film just trying to understand what he’s even saying. IT, you see, advocates groupthink, and has seized control of the inhabitants of the planet it has made its home, Camazotz; there, IT dominates the minds of all, and all live in lockstep with one another in accordance with IT’s will. Children stand in the driveways of their cookie cutter suburban dwellings, each bouncing a ball in time with one another before their mothers call them inside for dinner.
Even though it’s Oprah Winfrey, Reese Witherspoon and Mindy Kaling that will attract fans to see Disney’s A Wrinkle in Time, it is thanks to a talented group of people behind-the-scenes that will leave them wanting more. “We believe he is and the only one who can find him is you”, replies Mrs. And it’s kind of frustrating because it makes you up your game.
MEDITATION PARK: You can’t get more local than this.
Another problem was simply, this movie gave us nothing to really root for.
