Aaron Sorkin writing To Kill a Mockingbird stage adaptation
‘To Kill a Mockingbird is one of the most revered pieces of 20th century American literature, ‘ Sorkin said in an interview with The New York Times. Although “Mockingbird” has been staged before, the 89-year-old Lee had held tightly to the professional stage rights, until she was approached by this team.
The Oscar-winning screenwriter is writing a new stage adaptation of the iconic novel for the 2017-2018 Broadway season.
Sorkin, known for incorporating rapid-fire dialogue into his scripts, has worked with Rudin on an assortment of films, including Steve Jobs, The Social Network and Moneyball. I’m not the equal of Harper Lee. Rudin claims the Broadway play will be based on the original novel.
Gregory Peck starred in the 1962 movie version of “To Kill a Mockingbird”.
“To Kill a Mockingbird” centers around heroic attorney Atticus Finch, who defended a black man in Alabama during the Great Depression. Bartlett Sher has signed on to direct the show, produced by Scott Rudin. There are no details on where the show will take place or casting information, but this is new information and in the early stages of production, so keep an eye out for that.
Expect some pretty big names to go after the Atticus role in the Broadway adaptation, especially with big-name Hollywood talent like Sorkin and Rudin involved. He made his playwriting debut with 1989’s “A Few Good Men” – a title he adapted for the screen in 1992, in a film starring Tom Cruise, Demi Moore and Jack Nicholson. “Watchman” introduced a radically different version of some of the most beloved figures in American literature.
